Cuts for Nuts 2018

On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, all Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop locations across Canada will be participating in Cuts for Nuts – an event in support of Testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and other men’s health research. During the Cuts for Nuts event, $10 from every haircut or shave will be donated to The Movember Foundation. Those who donate $50 dollars or more will receive a free, limited edition gift on behalf of Tommy Gun’s and Movember.

The reason we partner with Movember is simple really; Men have nuts, Men also need haircuts. Tommy Guns and Movember value collaboration and together our two organizations have a long history of empowering men and creating solutions that allow them to live their life and live it well. Movember has been a huge focus for Tommy Gun’s from the very beginning. Cuts for Nuts and our collaboration with Movember is about so much more then developing funds. We know that by partnering with Movember – they are taking a holistic approach to men’s health, focusing both on cancer research and mental health as well.  A culture of silence has effected men’s longevity and the way they live their lives – we hope that Cuts for Nuts starts a conversation and gives our customers an engaging way to support men’s health by simply coming in for their usual cut or shave.

So make sure you join us on November 6th to help change the face of men’s health and show your support using the hashtag #CutsForNuts.

What Makes a Tommy Gun’s Grand Opening Awesome?

At Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop, we love a good event, function, shindig, hullabaloo, celebration, occasion or ceremony.

So it comes as no surprise that our Grand Opening Events are much more than just offering a discount to get people through the door. The goal is to showcase who we are as business owners, bearded brethren and fans of facial hair.

All of our shops are locally owned. We aren’t some big conglomerate looking to obliterate small business. Our model of business was hand crafted with care in Red Deer, Alberta and we have stayed true to our small town roots as we quickly became know for more than just a haircut and a shave. Grand Opening’s help us achieve our goal of becoming Canada’s Most Loved Barbershop.

All of our Grand Opening’s feature a Haircuts by Donation aspect, where customers donate however much they want to a local charitable organization in exchange for a haircut. All of the proceeds raised make an impact directly on the lives of men and their families in the surrounding community.

We do this by supporting charities and causes that support the overall health and well being of men, whether that be mental health causes, men’s cancer research and other health related issues.  We do this by supporting kids, because some men are Dads and some kids grow into men. We also do this by supporting animals, because the saying “man’s best friend” exists for a reason.

This is why we have Grand Opening’s. To help guys build trust in our brand by not only delivering a kick-ass haircut or straight razor shave, but by showing that we actually give a @#$% about what happens in our community.

If you do too, and happen to live in the Edmonton area – check out our next Grand Opening on October 27th @ 671 – 109 Kingsway Garden Mall NW.

All donations will go directly to Crystal Kids, “a community based provider of intervention and prevention services with outcomes-based service delivery. Our formula for mentoring youth combines strength-based principles with a harm-reduction model and a focus on relationships and capacity building.”

Big Bushy Mustache – TG Review

In the third release off his self-titled debut album, Jake Shears, front man of the Scissor Sisters, affectionately and aggresively shares his passion for a “Big Bushy Mustache”. And who would have guessed, but everyone here at Tommy Guns is stoked on it (as we are about most facial hair references).

The music video is equal parts sexy and disgusting. Fitting; considering the polarizing nature of most flavor savers.

Whether you are looking to maintain your big bushy mustache – or  if Shears video wanted to make you shave yours off, the team at Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop can help out no matter how big or small you want your mustache to be.

New Shop Opening: Nanaimo

Coming this fall, Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop will be opening a new location in Nanaimo! Not only are we excited for another excuse to experience Vancouver Island in all its rugged glory, we are even more stoked to offer more cuts and shaves to our mo-bros and bearded brethren than ever before.

To celebrate our new shop opening this fall and all things Nanaimo, we thought we would offer you a glimpse into Nanaimo life so you can experience it like a local.

White Sails
Built on the site of the old Newcastle Hotel, White Sails Brewing  is close to the downtown waterfront, across the street from Maffeo Sutton Park. The ambiance combined with great craft beers is what White Sails is all about! The excitement of sailing on the open ocean, the exhilaration when you get going and the peacefulness and relaxed feeling of being so close to nature all symbolize the ambiance in White Sails’ taproom.

2. Take the Ferry

Ferry and seaplanes offer services to most of the islands surrounding Nanaimo. Home to provincial parks with huge, old growth forests and giant trees. Get outside and explore them! Head to New Castle Island  (Saysutshun to the local Indigenous Peoples) or Gabriola Island and start feeling like the lumberjack you are.

3. Eat

Downtown Nanaimo Farmers Market
Located at the harbour, where you will be at the centre of Nanaimo’s distinct culture and outdoor beauty, this Farmer’s Market features local food and crafts each Friday from 10am – 2pm. The market is now in its 19th year. It is open this year until October 6th.

Gabriel’s Gourmet Cafe
An incredibly popular brunch spot, Gabriel’s sources the freshest ingredients directly from the farmer. They’ve built up several partnerships with local, small-scale, family farms to bring you fresh, seasonal vegetables, free range eggs, and pasture-fed, ethically-raised meats. They post the specials on Instagram everyday.

4. Get Your Fix

When you need a bit of a pick me up to help get yourself off of “island time” visit the crew at Regard Coffee Roasters. Established in 2015, they’ve built themselves a name as the friendliest coffee shop in town.

5. Look Good

Before you get too far into exploring everything that Nanaimo has to offer, make sure you look good doing it. Check in for some He-Time at our Tommy Guns Original Barbershop location in Nanaimo opening this Fall!

Beard Care and Maintenance

Beard Care and Maintenance – Taming Your Face Mane

At Tommy Guns Original Barbershop we are proud supporters of facial hair, and we believe that you should always give your beard the care and attention it deserves. We’ve pulled back the chin curtains to compile a list of some must-do maintenance for the man who wants to keep that face mane tamed!

  1. Your Barber is your Best Friend
Growing your beard can be a lengthy process, but now that you’ve made the commitment to let it grow – avoiding a scraggly beard is key. Don’t abandon your barber just because you want to keep a bit of length on your chin whiskers. Trimming your beard regularly promotes a healthier, fuller beard and can even promote faster growth.
  2. Sean Diddy Combs That Bad Boy
Chances are you made it through the growing stages and have endured that scratching and itching beard phase. Combing the beard everyday will not only improve the way your beard feels, but you will train it which way to grow, alleviating patchiness and problem areas.
  3. Hydra-Beard
Hydration of the skin and beard is paramount to a thick and delicious beard. After a shower your pores are more open and will more readily absorb anything you put on it. Before bed apply a beard balm. This will allow the product to spend the maximum amount of time on the skin and beard allowing for a deep conditioning which means a softer yet stronger beard.
  4. Clean Up Your Act
Shampoo and Conditioner – Not just for the hair on your head anymore. Products like this should be used frequently. Your beard is coming in contact with food crumbs and all sort of things that your hair does not. Be wary of commercial brands that contain harsh chemicals that can actually dry out the skin and leave beard hair brittle. Be sure to check the ingredients list in search of things like natural oils and ingredients that will leave your beard fluffy and touchable.
  5. Oils vs. Balms
With so many options to choose from, keeping track of what goes where can be a tricky task. But when it comes to beard maintenance two things remain clear; Just as grass won’t grow well on dry ground, a beard won’t grow well on dry skin. Beard oils are essential for keeping the skin underneath the beard healthy, and balms keep the beard hair conditioned.
