On November 9, 2019 all Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop locations across Canada will once again be participating in Cuts for Nuts – an event in support of The Movember Foundation, where $5 from every haircut or shave will be donated in support of Men’s Health Research. After raising $100,000 in 2018, the company is looking to surpass this goal.
The Movember Foundation funds innovative research; they aim to stop men from dying too young. According to the foundation, Testicular cancer strikes early. It is the most common cancer in men under 40, and diagnosis rates have doubled in the last 50 years.
“Movember has been a huge focus for Tommy Gun’s from the very beginning – it’s a cause that our entire organization feels very passionate about. This year, we wanted to double down on that commitment. Cuts for Nuts gives our customers an engaging and easy way to support men’s health by simply coming in for their usual cut or shave.” Says Keenan Fisher, Managing Partner of the Tommy Gun’s franchise. “Men have nuts, men also need haircuts. Our organizations have a long history of empowering men to live life and live it well.”
Members of the public are encouraged to stop by one of Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop locations for a cut or shave on Saturday, November 9 to help raise awareness and change the face of men’s health. Additionally, Tommy Gun’s will be accepting donations on behalf of the Movember Foundation throughout the month of November.

The leading charity changing the face of men’s health. Addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
Step #1 – Prep your Face
First things first, get your face wet to open your pores and make your hair stand up more. Either hit the shower or use a hot towel to prep your face.
Step #2 – Pre-Shave Oil
After your shower grab the pre-shave oil. Put a few drops in your palm, rub ’em together and work the oil into your beard for an extra smooth shave and protection from razor burn.
Step #3 – Wet Your Brush
Before you get to work, be sure to soak your brush in a bowl or mug of hot water. (hint: do this while you shower). Remove brush from bowl when you’re ready to shave and squeeze bristles vigorously. Give it a god shake as well. A properly soaked brush will make for a much better later.
Step #4 – Build Your Lather
When It comes to building a great lather, you have two choices; shaving soap or cream. If you’re a soap guy, start by loading your brush with soap, add a little water in your bowl, then swirl the brush in the bowl in a circular motion to build lather. If you prefer shaving cream, add a dollop to your brush, then swirl it around your bowl, gradually adding water as needed to build lather. In either case you’re looking to build dense and heavy lather, almost meringue- like in consistency. If its too bubbly, keep swirling to thicken. If its too thick, add a few drops of water and keep swirling until you achieve the right consistency.
Step #5 – Apply Your Lather
Once you’re are confident you have a good and thick lather, start applying it evenly across your face. Now you’re ready to shave.
Step # 6 – Shave
Safety razor or straight razor, you really cant go wrong. However, GO SLOW. Especially if you’re new to wet shaving… these bad boys are sharp! Many men find that doing multiple passes and applying cream between each pass is ideal. It’s best to go with the grain, across the grain, and finally against the grain if your skin isn’t too sensitive. But to avoid a Sweeny Todd situation, there is no shame in just going with the grain until you get the hang of it. Take your time. Enjoy yourself. And if you really must, send your grandfather (or some other old-timer) a quick selfie to restore his faith in man kind.
Step #7 – After Shave
Immediately after shaving, rinse your face with cold water to remove excess cream and close your pores. Apply a quick hit of aftershave and you’re ready to party.

At Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop we know that the people who cut hair in our shops are by far some of the coolest and arguably the best barbers in any city. That’s why we’ve started our blog series called “Behind the Barber Chair” to showcase some of this talent and spread the word about the folks in our barbershops. For our inaugural edition, we decided to sit down with one of our National Educators. This is Behind the Barber Chair with Faren Yaskiw.
Faren grew up in the small town of Strathmore, just east of Calgary and has been a licensed hairstylist since 2005. Her switch to barbering began just shy of 4 years ago, as did her experience with Tommy Gun’s. “I decided to be a barber when I realized women’s hair wasn’t my passion anymore.” Says Yaskiw “I really enjoyed cutting, but not so much the chemical processes. Instead of giving up on the industry as a whole I wanted to give barbering a try.”
“I love the environment, the conversation, and guests that I work with on the daily in the barbershop”
The environment, the conversation, and the guests give Faren everything she needs to remain passionate about her work. Now going on 4 years strong at the Calgary East Hills location, and a National Educator for Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop, Faren has had the opportunity to shake hands with many talented barbers. We asked her who she looks up to as a barber and she told us “One person that stands out in my mind that I admire their skill and technique would be Shon Lawhon (@slawhon) from Layrite. His passion for the industry, His vision, his technical ability is nothing short of amazing.”
So the next time you are in Calgary googling ” Barbershops Near Me” check-in online and get a hot shave from one of the best in the biz.
That’s it for this Edition of Behind the Barber Chair – Big thanks to Faren for taking the time to sit down with us.

Being a business owner is cool, but you know what’s cooler? Owning a
Tommy Gun’s Original Barbershop.
A year ago I became a Tommy Gun’s franchise owner, and since then I haven’t looked back. Being an entrepreneur I work to live life on my terms, if I don’t believe in it I know I’m not going to succeed. I invested in owning a Tommy Gun’s because I believe in the Tommy Gun’s brand. My wife will ask me if I’ve changed my shirt everyday because I wear TG branded everything, right from my underwear to my tailored shirts. I definitely drink the kool-aid even the other Calgary owners tease me about it. But I love it, I embrace it because I believe in it, I know there’s an entire brand behind me to succeed as a business owner and that gives me the confidence I need.
Tommy Gun’s has found that niche between old school barbershop to new school he-time pampering and I think the brand is just going to keep growing. The power of any business is always in the name. The success of the business comes from marketing that name and brand, refine your operations, build your culture and invest in your people. There is a process in place that the brand delivers on to its franchisees and its people. That process has been empowering to learn from and I know as an owner I will continue to grow in the years to come.
